Chintan Naik and EMDR Association

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences. It uses a structured approach to address past, present, and future aspects of disturbing memories. The approach was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro to resolve the development of trauma-related disorders resulting from exposure to a traumatic or distressing event, such as rape, natural disaster, or childhood trauma.

Since Dr. Francine Shapiro introduced EMDR to the clinical community in the year 1989, the last 25 years have seen phenomenal research on the effectiveness of this therapy. Widely applied in the USA, Europe and many parts of Asia, EMDR is accepted as a valid method of treatment for PTSD by the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association today.

EMDR therapy is recommended for children, adolescents and adults with PTSD by World Health Organization (W.H.O.), 2013.

EMDR Association is registered in India (Registered under Society Registration Act, Maharashtra State, India and Registration No.1768). Chintan Naik and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation

Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the immune system destroys insulin-making cells in the pancreas. These are called beta cells. The condition is usually diagnosed in children and young people, and thus it is called juvenile diabetes.

Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) is a registered trust that was set up in 1982 by a handful of doctors and parents of a few insulin-dependent diabetic children. The objective of the foundation is to provide moral support to diabetic children and youth apart from catering to the physical, emotional, psychological, and medical needs of its members.

JDF is a voluntary organization and has been at the service of its members, diabetologists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, diabetes educators, counselors, and dieticians who work on honorary basis while the administrative work is by and large handled by its members who serve voluntarily.

Chintan Naik has been working at Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Andheri, as a counselor/clinical psychologist since July 2010. He works closely with the family of the child having diabetes while providing psychosocial support and individual counselling to the patient as well as care-givers.

He, along with the team of mental health professionals, conducts workshops and interactive sessions addressing families with the topic of ‘living with diabetes’.

Over the last 30 years, JDF has periodically hosted a multitude of education-social events, fostering a sense of companionship and assurance among JDs, who may feel otherwise when left to cope with their emotions and social lives by themselves.

The highlight of JDF is its annual summer (one-day) and winter (three-day) camps. The day-long summer camp happens in early June within Mumbai, complete with educational sessions, healthy meals, and activities for children. Winter Camp is held in early December, and is a three-day long camp outside Mumbai (for the last eight years, in Lonavala).

Over 200 juvenile diabetics from all over the country attend this camp every year. Over the three days of the camp, all JDs and their families are expected to attend well planned sessions, which are divided across three days, and cover topics ranging from insulin techniques, diet, and peer pressure, to marriage and traveling.

Chintan Naik has been an active member of the Mental Health Team co-conducting sessions on the topic of ‘Living with Diabetes’ since 2010.
